Lady Godiva

Legend has it that in 1057, Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long hair, to protest her husband’s taxes on the poor.
Read more about it here.

Lady Godiva (c.1898) by the Hon. John Collier (1850-1934) is in the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry, England.

To commemorate Lady Godiva’s ride, a procession re-enacting her original route began on this day (May 31st) in 1678 and is held annually.
