Happy Birthday, Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart (born 10 January 1945) turns 72 today.

In Rod: The Autobiography, Rod devotes a complete chapter to his crowning glory.

"I started having my bouffant hairstyle, as I used to call it, way back in the late '60s. ... I just [thought] people would be interested. I'd never heard of hair lacquer around my way, where I lived in those days, and even a hairdryer was considered absolute luxury. My sister had a hairdryer, and I remember I used to have to put warm water and sugar on my hair and then run up to my sister's [house], about 50 yards away, in the middle of winter, and blowdry it."

"Can we talk about the hair?" "Late Late Show" host James Corden asked of Stewart's signature hairstyle. "'Cause it's a work of art. How long does it take to get that — to get 'the full Stewart'?"

"It's 10 minutes," Stewart insisted, at which point Cordon couldn’t resist running his fingers through Stewart’s hair.

Cordon called it "a beautiful moment between two open-minded, broad-minded guys."

David Bowie's Hairstylist: Teddy Antolin

The man who introduced David Bowie to his future wife died earlier this week, age 68, a month after David Bowie.

Teddy Antolin styles Bowie for a 1987 show in New Zealand

Teddy Antolin was responsible for Bowie's Ziggy Stardust look, amongst other styles. "[Bowie] with full-on makeup, looked unearthly, another sex and there was something about David that transcended fashion and he made it unique and you wanted to be like that," he shared.

He said of Bowie, "He was very focused and he knew everything about fashion, hair and makeup – it was fun. I would color his hair with blonde streaks and sometimes make it bolder and he never complained. He understood why."

Teddy’s celebrity clientele included David Bowie, Iman, Jackie Collins, Geena Davis, Liza Minnelli, Lolita Davidovich, Raquel Welch, Bryan Adams, Joe Dallesandro, Sharon Stone and B.D. Wong. Teddy also appeared on Lifetime Television Network doing a one-hour makeover series, and he designed hair for Raquel Welch Signature Collection of wigs and hair additions.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men

17-year-old David Bowie (then David Jones) formed The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men in 1964...

“I think we’re all fairly tolerant,” says David, “but for the last two years we’ve had comments like ‘Darling!’ and ‘Can I carry your handbag?’ thrown at us, and I think it just has to stop now.”
