Hair Salon Havoc

Beautician Mistress MJ is back and shocked by the state of this salon.

I can’t turn my back around here for a minute, can I?...

To Our Customers

Beautician TJB has been neglecting his chair lately, due to the pressing demands of his other gig as resident mixologist at SSUWAT; he kindly requests that his clients slap on a wig of their choice until he can attend to their tresses.

Secrets of a Beauty Parlor

What are the secrets here at The Hair Hall of Fame?

If I've told her once, I've told her a thousand times...

Don't fall asleep while getting your weave done. It never works out. Now she's walking around town sporting something which looks like the cat laid it on the porch first.

Poor Brit Brit. Such a sad existence. The demin outfits. The marriages and divorces. The trips to gas station bathrooms sans shoes. The drugs. The shaved head. The public freakouts. It makes the place where my heart should be feel something akin to sadness.

Wait, that's my cheese danish repeating on me.

But there's hope for her yet. Pick yourself up Brit. Lick that Cheeto dust off your fingers and seize the day. Viva Brit Brit!

(Note: Let's be serious, I only support her when she's in the salon. The moment she leaves, I rush to the break room to dish on her tragedies with the other stylists.)

Wonder Wigs:

"Of shining Dynel that looks like real hair..."

"Jayne Mansfield, seated, and Helen Turpin, head hair stylist at 20th Century Fox Studios. On eve of Jayne's wedding, 1958."

Our Miss Brooks

Louise Brooks was perhaps the first Hollywood star to intermingle her acting talents with her daring do.  Other Hollywood stars had started fashion crazed - Mary Pickford with her sausage curls to name just one, but Brooks' hair was different and it started a revolution among the sytle conscious in the roaring twenties. With it, Brooks could be a girl, a lady and a woman, and sometimes all three at once.

Women's hair had been prized for its length and volume before the 1920s, but as the Jazz Age began to burn bright, short hair for women became the rage.  Brooks bob, which broke through at the crest of the maddess that was the 1920s, took that short hair fad and turned it into a frenzy.  No curl, all straight, with the only flourish being a semi curl that cut the cheeks beneath the facial bone.   And unless their customers had the exact type of hair as Brooks, the results were never quite what their clients expected.

In fact, the look was difficult to dupicate because of the hair straightening techniques of the day (which cooked the hair leaving it dry and crispy) so while many aspired to Brooks look, few, if any could pull it off then, and almost no one chooses to try it today.

Blow jobs, part duex

it's especially fun if you're having chemo.

Blow Jobs: LPGA Regulation Hair 1970-1990s

"It" required no hair stylist, just a cut every now and then, a hand held blow drier and a a roller brush. "It" could be quite fem, or all business. "It" could be short or longish.

What is "it"?

"It" started with Dorothy Hamill's "cute bob" at the 1976 winter Olympics, and was quickly adopted by every "lady" golfer in the world, and it ushered in an era of sexually ambiguous "Womens Golf".  Gone were sponsorships by the dainty makers of "White Rain" and "Adorn", replaced by the makers of something called "Ping" and worse, "Levi's".

Once they adopted it, dare I say it, golf skirts died a silent death, and coaching shorts seemed like a natural accessory, followed by golf shirts.  The "ams" were no longer the wives of professional husbands: now they were career gals. And talk on the course was no longer about their children - replaced by fervent discussions of the past womens basketball season and the season to come.  Bitchy behavior was defenestrated and butchy back slapping was in.  And you just know that in the locker room, daintiness gave way to towel snapping, and Holly Near singing songs of strong "womyn"over the Muzak.

This, my friends is what happens when you sacrifice style for carefree.  What was once a ladies round, has become a women's game.
