Our Edie

We feature here, one Edie Windsor. Edie Windsor, shown her in 1965, had fabulous hair. Good cut. Good color. And the cut that suits her. Again, this is 1965 when she was systems engineer with Xerox.

This is Edie Windsor in 2013. She STILL has fabulous hair and a great cut - one that other woman of her age might consider too soft and daring, but Edie can pull it off.

NOW, some of you know who Edie Windsor is, and others do not. For those of you who don't know who she is, Edie Windsor is the widow of Dr. Thea Spyer. Spyer and Windsor were engaged for forty years, married in Canada. And after Spyer's death, Ms. Windsor got socked with a $365,000 tax bill from the IRS because the U.S. tax code didn't recognize their marriage as legal, therefore there was no tax protection afforded their assets. While Windsor paid the tax bill, she knew it wasn't fair. Why should straight couples who are married be afforded protection against the IRS levies, while same sex couples had to lie down and take it?

Edie had a point. And she sued. And even though the Obama Administration agreed to refund back her payment as part of a court settlement, the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was the real sticking point. So to challenge DOMA, Edie's case went to the U.S. Supreme Court where it was heard one week ago.

So Edie is a hero. A hero with great hair. And I hope for more reasons than I can count that Edie wins. Yeah, sure, we all win if Edie wins, but a love that strong that it out lived all my father's marriages laid end to end deserves to have a victory ruling DOMA unconstitutional as its cherry on the top.

The Court is expected to announce it verdict in June, 2013

And that is Edie Windsor.
