Still life with poodle

I sometimes wonder what the supermarket checkout operator must think of me, amidst the throng and their overloaded carts; my basket filled with just the essentials: 2 litres of Schweppes diet tonic, a large can of industrial strength hairspray, and a carton of marlboro lights.
